Acer platanoides Autumn Red is a variety of the commonly known Plane-Laved Maple, and is a medium sized, deciduous tree with fantastically coloured foliage. The lush foliage emerges bronze-red in spring, ages to become mid-green through summer, then develops orange and red tones in autumn before falling. Clusters of small, orange-yellow flowers are borne in summer and give rise to winged seeds called samaras in autumn. It grows with an upright, spreading habit and will eventually reach 15 m tall and 8 m wide. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site, with young trees staked while they establish. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, moderate wind, and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. Acer Autumn Red makes for a magnificent specimen and is ideal for parks and large gardens where is provides wonderful shade and colour. It is also well-suited to lifestyle properties for providing shelter, screening, and vibrant colour.
