Growing Acacia melanoxylon Successfully in NZ

Acacia melanoxylon, commonly known as Australian Blackwood, grows well in most parts of New Zealand. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil, but will tolerate a range of soil types, including clay. This fast-growing, evergreen tree is ideal for shelterbelts, timber production, or native revegetation. It withstands wind, frost, and coastal conditions well. For best results, water regularly while young and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune lower branches as needed to encourage a straight trunk and strong form.

Acacia melanoxylon Care Tips

Acacia melanoxylon is a hardy, fast-growing tree that requires minimal care once established. Water regularly during the first 1–2 years to support strong root development, especially in dry conditions. Mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. It benefits from an annual application of balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune lower limbs when young to shape the tree and promote a single, straight trunk if grown for timber. Avoid waterlogged sites, and minimal maintenance is needed once mature.

Plant Size and Spacing

Acacia melanoxylon typically grows to 10–15 metres tall and 6–10 metres wide, though it can reach up to 30 metres in ideal conditions. It has a fast growth rate, especially in its early years. For shelterbelt or timber planting, space trees 3–4 metres apart in rows. In larger landscape or revegetation settings, allow 5–6 metres spacing to accommodate mature canopy spread and root systems.
