Senecio serpens (Blue Chalk Sticks)

5 from 2 customers

Senecio serpens, commonly known as Blue Chalksticks, is a succulent grown for its foliage and creeping growth habit. It forms a carpet of pointed, powdery, blue foliage. These are held as upright clusters on stems that creep across the ground and shoot up new clusters as they grow to 25 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Senecio serpens is commonly maintained in a container, used in rock gardens, added to Mediterranean-themed gardens, grown along the edge of a path where it can spill out or over, or used as a groundcover. A mass planting produces the best displays with this plant.

How to grow Senecio serpens in NZ

Senecio serpens, also known as Blue Chalksticks, grows well in New Zealand when planted in full sun and free-draining soil. This drought-tolerant succulent thrives in poor soils and coastal conditions, making it perfect for rockeries, borders, and containers. Water sparingly, especially in winter, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Trim back any leggy growth to maintain a dense, tidy habit.

Senecio serpens care tips

Senecio serpens is very low maintenance once established. Plant it in a sunny position with well-draining soil and avoid waterlogged conditions. Water only when the soil is completely dry, as it is drought tolerant and prone to root rot if overwatered. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to encourage growth. Remove spent flowers and trim back straggly stems to keep the plant compact and healthy. Protect from severe frosts if grown in colder regions.

How to prune Blue Chalk Sticks

To prune Blue Chalk Sticks (Senecio serpens), use clean, sharp secateurs to trim back any leggy, damaged, or dead stems. Prune just above a healthy leaf node to encourage bushier growth. This can be done at any time of year, but spring and summer are best when the plant is actively growing. Avoid cutting back too hard into old wood, as it may not reshoot. Remove any flower stalks once they finish to keep the plant tidy and compact.

Senecio serpens plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Senecio serpens typically grows to about 15–20 cm tall and can spread up to 50–60 cm wide, forming a dense mat of blue-grey foliage. It has a moderate growth rate, filling out nicely over a growing season in ideal conditions. When planting, space plants about 40–50 cm apart to allow room for them to spread and form a continuous ground cover without overcrowding.
