How to grow the Trailing Jade plant in NZ

The Trailing Jade plant (Senecio jacobsenii) grows best in New Zealand when planted in a free-draining succulent mix and positioned in a warm spot with bright, indirect light. It will also tolerate some direct morning sun. Water only when the soil has completely dried out, as it is drought-tolerant and susceptible to root rot if kept too wet. Feed with a diluted succulent fertiliser in spring and summer to promote healthy, vigorous growth. Protect from frost in cooler regions.

Trailing Jade plant (Senecio jacobsenii) care tips

Trailing Jade (Senecio jacobsenii) is low maintenance when its basic needs are met. Place it in bright, indirect light and avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings, and reduce watering further during winter. Use a free-draining succulent mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot. Feed with a diluted succulent fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer, and trim back any leggy growth to keep the plant full and healthy.
