It produces thick, trailing stems that host small, succulent, and blue-green leaves. It often produces a pink flower at the end of the stem during spring. It typically grows to 15 cm in height and 40 cm in width, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. Donkey-Tail is commonly grown in a hanging basket, used in rock gardens, or grown indoors in offices and the like.

How to grow Sedum morganianum in NZ

Sedum morganianum, commonly known as Burro's Tail or Donkey's Tail, grows well in New Zealand when provided with the right conditions. Plant it in a pot or hanging basket with free-draining cactus or succulent mix. Position in full sun to bright indirect light, but protect from harsh afternoon sun to avoid leaf scorch. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering in winter. Avoid disturbing the fragile stems, and shelter from frost.

Sedum morganianum (Donkey's Tail) care tips

Sedum morganianum prefers bright indirect light or morning sun and must be planted in well-drained soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering during the winter months. Avoid overhead watering to prevent rot and protect the plant from frost and cold drafts. Handle gently as the trailing stems and leaves are very delicate. Fertilise sparingly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Ideal for hanging baskets or pots in sheltered outdoor or indoor spaces.

Plant size and growth habit

Sedum morganianum is a trailing succulent that can grow stems up to 60 cm long or more, making it an ideal choice for hanging baskets. Each stem is densely packed with plump, blue-green leaves that resemble a donkey’s tail. It grows slowly and prefers to cascade downward, forming a graceful, spilling habit over time.
