Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red'

How to grow Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' in NZ

Grow Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' in full sun in a suitable sheltered position, using soil that drains freely. Clear weeds before planting and set each plant at its original depth. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist while roots establish. Space plants to allow their spreading habit to develop. A light mulch between young plants reduces competition. Containers should have drainage holes and room for stems to extend over the edge.

Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' care tips

Care for Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' by matching moisture and feeding to its growing season. Water during establishment and prolonged dry spells, especially in containers. Trim wandering stems when necessary to keep paths and neighbouring plants clear. Remove damaged foliage and any weeds appearing between plants. Feed lightly during the growing season if growth needs support. Avoid overwatering and maintain good airflow around the spreading foliage. Regular checks help you respond promptly to changing conditions.

Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' size, spacing, and growth rate

Mesembryanthemum 'Petes Red' typically reaches about 20 cm tall and 50 cm wide under suitable conditions. For individual plants, allow about 50 cm between centres to give the foliage space without excessive crowding. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Final size varies with climate, soil, container size, and maintenance. Allow for the expected spread when positioning plants beside paths, walls, or neighbouring specimens. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust nearby planting as its natural form becomes clearer.
