Furcraea guatemalensis

Guatemalan Furcraea

Furcraea guatemalensis is a large succulent favoured for its long, blue-green leaves which are supported by a thick trunk. The rigid-looking, yet flexible leaves are at first erect then droop down to hang as a skirt. When the plant matures it produces green flowers which are borne on stalks up to 5 m long. Not including the flower stalk, it typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide. This succulent grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is hardy to dry conditions but cold and frosty sites should be avoided. This plant is often used as an accent or architectural plant due to its structure and form. It is also great for planting in a dry corner, adding to a mixed planting, avenue planting, or using to contrast with other leaf forms.
