Dioscorea elephantipes

Elephants Foot

Commonly known as Elephants Foot, this is an impressive and rare succulent. It features a thick base with indents that resemble an elephants foot. The foliage is mid-green and has a wispy fern-like appearance. Together the foliage and base make this a spectacular plant. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and 30 cm wide when grown in a pot, but can grow larger in favourable conditions outdoors. It performs best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site with good air flows. Elephants Foot is commonly grown as an unusual, yet very interesting potted plant. It is well suited to offices and other warm spaces. It is also included in rock gardens or other outdoor areas where it wont get frosted.
