5 from 1 customers

Aloe thraskii, commonly known as the Dune Aloe, is a succulent that carries fleshy, green-grey leaves arranged in a large rosette, held off an upright stem. The foliage is complemented with yellow flowers from winter through to spring. This sculptural plant typically grows to 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Aloe thraskii is commonly maintained in a container, added to succulent and rock garden plantings, used in the drier parts of the garden, included in Mediterranean-themed gardens, or included in mixed plantings to contrast with other foliage types.

How to grow Aloe thraskii in NZ

To grow Aloe thraskii (Dune Aloe) successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny, coastal or sheltered location with free-draining, sandy or gritty soil. This aloe prefers warm conditions and is best suited to frost-free areas, though it may tolerate light frost once established. Plant in a raised bed or sloped position to enhance drainage. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between watering, especially during winter. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Aloe thraskii forms a large, single-stemmed rosette with arching, grey-green leaves and tall flower spikes in mid to late summer, making it ideal for bold, architectural planting in coastal or dry gardens.

Aloe thraskii care tips

Aloe thraskii grows best in full sun with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter to avoid rot. It prefers warm, coastal conditions and should be protected from heavy frost, especially when young. Remove spent flower spikes and damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. This aloe is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it ideal for exposed, dry, or seaside gardens in New Zealand.

Dune Aloe plant size and spacing

Aloe thraskii, commonly known as Dune Aloe, typically grows 2 to 3 metres tall and about 1.5 to 2 metres wide, forming a tall, single-stemmed rosette with gracefully arching leaves. When planting multiple Dune Aloes, space them at least 2 metres apart to allow for full canopy development, airflow, and to highlight their bold, architectural form in the landscape.
