Aloe striata (Coral Aloe)

5 from 1 customers

Aloe striata, commonly known as the Coral Aloe, carries fleshy, grey-green leaves with a red margin. The foliage is complemented with tall stems baring coral-red flowers in winter. This sculptural plant typically grows to 60 cm tall and the same wide. Aloe striata is commonly maintained in a container, added to succulent and rock garden plantings, used in the drier parts of the garden, included in Mediterranean themed gardens, or included in mixed planting to contrast with other foliage types.

How to grow Aloe striata in NZ

To grow Aloe striata in New Zealand, choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well drained, sandy soil. Plant in a sheltered position to protect from heavy frost. Water sparingly, letting the soil dry between watering, and avoid wet conditions in winter. This aloe suits rock gardens, pots, and coastal areas, and produces coral red flowers in late winter. It is low maintenance and can tolerate dry conditions once established.

Aloe striata (Coral Aloe) care tips

Aloe striata prefers full sun or light shade and thrives in well drained, sandy soil. Water only when the soil is dry, especially in winter, to prevent root rot. It benefits from a sheltered spot in cooler areas to avoid frost damage. Apply a light feed in spring if desired, but it generally needs little fertiliser. Remove spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought tolerant and easy to care for once established.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe striata typically grows to about 45 centimetres tall and 60 centimetres wide, forming a smooth, stemless rosette. When planting multiple Coral Aloes, space them at least 60 to 80 centimetres apart to allow for mature spread and good airflow between plants. This also helps reduce the risk of rot in damp conditions.
