How to grow Spider Aloe (Aloe spinosissima) in NZ

To grow Spider Aloe (Aloe spinosissima) successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. This aloe thrives in warm, dry conditions and tolerates light frost once established. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter to avoid rot. In cooler regions, plant in a sheltered spot or grow in a container that can be moved under cover. Spider Aloe forms dense clumps of spiky green leaves with reddish tips and produces tall, orange-red flower spikes in spring. It is ideal for rock gardens, dry borders, or pots where bold texture and colour are desired.

Aloe spinosissima care tips

Aloe spinosissima, or Spider Aloe, prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering during winter to prevent rot. Protect from heavy frost in cooler areas by planting in a sheltered spot or growing in a container. Remove old flower stalks and any damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and forms attractive clumps over time.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe spinosissima typically grows 60 to 90 centimetres tall and 60 to 100 centimetres wide, forming dense clumps of arching, spiky leaves. When planting multiple Spider Aloes, space them about 70 to 100 centimetres apart to allow for mature spread and good airflow. This spacing helps maintain plant health and showcases their bold structure in garden beds or rockeries.
