How to grow Aloe plicatilis in NZ

To grow Aloe plicatilis (Fan Aloe) in New Zealand, choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with free draining soil, ideally sandy or gritty. It prefers a warm, sheltered position protected from heavy frost and cold winds. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering, and avoid wet soils during winter. Fan Aloe is ideal for containers, rock gardens, and dry landscapes. It grows slowly but rewards with striking fan shaped foliage and vibrant orange red flowers in late winter to spring.

Aloe plicatilis care tips

Aloe plicatilis grows best in full sun or light shade with well drained, sandy soil. Water deeply but infrequently, letting the soil dry out between watering, especially in cooler months. Protect it from heavy frost and cold winds, particularly in southern regions. Avoid water collecting in branch joints to prevent rot. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. This aloe is drought tolerant once established and benefits from a sheltered, warm position in the garden.

Fan Aloe plant size and spacing

Aloe plicatilis (Fan Aloe) typically grows 2 to 5 metres tall and around 1.5 to 2 metres wide, forming a multi-branched, tree-like shape. When planting, space Fan Aloes at least 2 metres apart to allow room for their mature spread and to maintain good airflow. This spacing also enhances their architectural form and prevents overcrowding in landscape settings.
