Aloe peglerae (Fez Aloe)

Aloe peglerae is a small, stemless aloe that features succulent, blue-grey leaves that tend to curve inwards. As the leaves curl inwards, they form a nest around the flowering stalk. Red flowers are produced in winter on a single flower stalk and create a stunning display as they grow to 70 cm tall and 50 cm wide. Aloe peglerae (the Fez Aloe) is commonly planted in the drier parts of the garden, grown in a container, added to a mixed planting of succulents, or in borders. It provides a great talking point due to its unusual growth habit.

How to grow Aloe peglerae successfully in NZ

To grow Aloe peglerae (Fez Aloe) successfully in New Zealand, choose a warm, sunny position with excellent drainage. Plant in sandy or gritty soil, or use a raised bed or container to prevent waterlogging. This aloe is drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions, so water only when the soil is completely dry. In cooler regions, protect from heavy frost and cold winds. Fez Aloe grows slowly and forms compact, bluish grey rosettes that are ideal for rock gardens and dry landscapes.

Aloe peglerae care tips

Aloe peglerae prefers full sun and well drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering, especially in winter. It is drought tolerant and does not require regular feeding. Protect from heavy frost in colder areas by planting in a sheltered spot or using a container. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to keep the rosette tidy. This aloe grows slowly and is best suited to dry, low maintenance gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe peglerae typically grows to about 30 centimetres tall and 30 to 40 centimetres wide, forming a compact, dome-shaped rosette. When planting multiple Fez Aloes, space them at least 40 to 50 centimetres apart to allow for mature spread and good airflow. This helps maintain plant health and showcases their unique form effectively in garden settings.
