Aloe nubigena (Cliff Aloe)

How to grow Aloe nubigena in NZ

To grow Aloe nubigena successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny to lightly shaded spot with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. This rare aloe prefers a warm, sheltered position and does not tolerate heavy frost, so provide protection in cooler regions or grow it in a container that can be moved under cover. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between watering, and avoid watering in winter. Aloe nubigena forms a compact rosette and produces vibrant flowers in the warmer months. It is ideal for rock gardens, pots, or dry borders where drainage is excellent.

Aloe nubigena care tips

Aloe nubigena grows best in full sun to light shade with free-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering during winter to avoid rot. Protect the plant from heavy frost by placing it in a sheltered spot or growing it in a container in cooler regions. Remove any damaged leaves and spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established.

Cliff Aloe plant size and spacing

Aloe nubigena, commonly known as Cliff Aloe, typically grows to about 30 to 40 centimetres tall and 40 to 60 centimetres wide, forming a compact rosette. When planting multiple Cliff Aloes, space them around 50 to 60 centimetres apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. This spacing also helps prevent overcrowding and highlights the plant's unique form in rock gardens or containers.
