Aloe glauca (Blue Aloe)

Aloe glauca, commonly known as the Blue Aloe, is a succulent that features rosettes of blue-green foliage. The leaves are broad with large, red-brown teeth. Each rosette can produce up to three blooms of pink to pale orange flowers in late winter. It typically grows to 80 cm tall and 1 m wide, growing best in full sun on a well-drained soil. Aloe glauca is well-suited to planting in arid environments, growing as a specimen, or included in a mixed planting with other succulents.

How to grow Aloe glauca in NZ

To grow Aloe glauca successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny, sheltered spot with free draining, sandy or gritty soil. This aloe is drought tolerant and prefers dry conditions, so water only when the soil is completely dry, especially in winter. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils to prevent root rot. In colder areas, protect from frost by planting in a warm microclimate or using containers that can be moved under cover. Aloe glauca forms clumps of powdery blue grey leaves and produces tall flower spikes, making it ideal for dry borders, rock gardens, and pots.

Aloe glauca care tips

Aloe glauca prefers full sun and well drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering. Avoid overhead watering and protect from excess moisture in winter. In cooler regions, shelter the plant from heavy frost. Remove old flower stalks and damaged leaves to keep it tidy. This aloe is drought tolerant and thrives with minimal care, making it ideal for low maintenance gardens and dry landscapes.

Blue Aloe size, growth rate, and spacing

Aloe glauca, commonly known as Blue Aloe, typically grows to about 60 to 90 centimetres tall and 60 centimetres wide, forming upright rosettes that may slowly clump over time. It has a moderate growth rate under warm, dry conditions. When planting multiple Blue Aloes, space them around 60 to 80 centimetres apart to allow room for mature spread and to ensure good airflow, which helps prevent rot and keeps the plants looking their best.
