Aloe ferox (Cape Aloe)

Aloe ferox, commonly known as the Cape Aloe, is a single-stemmed aloe that typically grows to 3 m tall and 1 m wide. The crown comprises a dense rosette of succulent, dull green to red-brown leaves. Each leaf can be up to 70 cm long and carries dark brown spines. The foliage is complemented with clusters of bright orange flowers in winter, which are borne off an upright stem. Aloe ferox is well-suited to planting in arid environments, where it is often grown as a specimen. It is commonly included in Mediterranean-themed gardens, used in a mixed planting with other succulents, or maintained in a container.

How to grow Aloe ferox in NZ

To grow Aloe ferox successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny, well-drained location with shelter from strong winds and heavy frost. This large, architectural aloe prefers sandy or gritty soil and is ideal for dry gardens, borders, or large containers. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter. In colder regions, plant in a warm microclimate or a pot that can be moved under cover. Aloe ferox grows slowly but develops into a striking specimen with tall orange-red flower spikes in late winter or spring.

Aloe ferox care tips

Aloe ferox prefers full sun and free-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Water only when the soil is dry, especially during cooler months, to prevent root rot. In colder regions, provide frost protection or grow in a large container that can be moved under cover. Remove dead leaves and spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and benefits from a warm, sheltered position to thrive in New Zealand gardens.

Cape Aloe size, growth rate, and spacing

Aloe ferox, commonly known as Cape Aloe, typically grows 2 to 3 metres tall and 1 to 1.5 metres wide, forming a single, upright trunk with a dense rosette of spiky green leaves. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, depending on climate and conditions. When planting, space Cape Aloe at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow room for its mature size and to ensure good airflow around the plant.
