Aloe castanea

4 from 1 customers

Aloe castanea, commonly known as the Cat-Tail Aloe, is a shrub or tree-like Aloe that grows to 2.5 m tall and 1.5 m wide with a single stem. The long and somewhat narrow leaves are blue-green, fleshy, and have sharp, brown teeth. Clusters of small, dark orange-brown flowers are borne in winter and tend to resemble a cat's tail. Aloe castanea is commonly added to a mixed planting, grown as a specimen, included in Mediterranean-themed gardens, or included anywhere a carefree and attractive plant is required.

How to grow Aloe castanea in NZ

To grow Aloe castanea (Cat's Tail Aloe) in New Zealand, choose a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil, ideally sandy or gritty. This aloe prefers dry conditions and is drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter. In colder areas, protect it from heavy frost or grow it in a large container that can be moved under cover. Aloe castanea forms a tall, branching shrub with curved, dark orange flower spikes that appear in late summer or early autumn. It is best suited to dry borders, rock gardens, or feature planting in warm, frost-free regions.

Aloe castanea care tips

Aloe castanea thrives in full sun with well drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering during winter to prevent rot. It prefers a warm, sheltered position and should be protected from heavy frost in cooler areas. Prune off spent flower stalks and remove any damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance once established, making it ideal for dry gardens and feature planting.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe castanea typically grows 2 to 3 metres tall and about 1.5 to 2 metres wide, forming a tall, branching shrub. When planting multiple Cat's Tail Aloes, space them at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for mature spread and to maintain good airflow. This also helps showcase their striking form and tall flower spikes effectively in the landscape.
