Aloe brevifolia (Crocodile Plant, Short-Leaved Aloe)

5 from 1 customers

Aloe brevifolia, commonly known as the Crocodile plant or Short-Leaved Aloe, is a succulent that produces a rosette of warty, blue-green leaves that are thick, pointed, and carry soft, white teeth. The foliage is complemented with yellow flowers in winter as it grows to 20 cm and 40 cm wide. Aloe brevifolia is commonly mass-planted either as a ground cover or in borders, and makes an excellent pot plant indoors or out. It is also often used in rock and Mediterranean-themed gardens.

How to grow Aloe brevifolia in NZ

To grow Aloe brevifolia successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny position with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. This compact aloe prefers dry conditions and is ideal for rock gardens, pots, or edging in dry landscapes. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering, and reduce watering in winter. In cooler regions, provide protection from heavy frost or grow in a container that can be moved under cover. Aloe brevifolia forms dense clumps of blue-green rosettes and produces orange-red flowers in late spring.

Aloe brevifolia (Crocodile Plant) care tips

Aloe brevifolia, or Crocodile Plant, grows best in full sun with well-drained, gritty or sandy soil. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering, and reduce moisture during winter to avoid rot. Protect from heavy frost in cooler areas by planting in a sheltered spot or using a container. Remove spent flower stalks and damaged leaves to keep it tidy. This aloe is drought-tolerant and ideal for pots, rock gardens, or low-maintenance borders.

Short-Leaved Aloe plant size and spacing

The Short-Leaved Aloe (Aloe brevifolia) typically grows to about 15 to 20 centimetres tall and 30 to 40 centimetres wide, forming dense clumps of rosettes. When planting multiple Crocodile Plants, space them around 30 to 40 centimetres apart to allow for natural spreading and to ensure good airflow. This spacing also helps highlight their compact, geometric form in garden beds or containers.
