Aloe ballyi (Rat Aloe)

Aloe ballyi, commonly known as the Rat Aloe, is an unusual succulent. It produces a rosette of long and fleshy leaves atop a slender stem. The fleshy leaves are grey-green with small, white teeth along the margins. Red-orange flowers are borne on long stems during summer. It can grow to 3 m or more tall and 80 cm wide, but is easily contained with trimming as necessary. Aloe ballyi makes for an excellent specimen and is commonly included in plantings for its structural form and unusualness. It is great for adding height and texture to a planting.

How to grow Aloe ballyi in NZ

To grow Aloe ballyi successfully in New Zealand, choose a warm, sunny position with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. This rare tree aloe prefers a sheltered location protected from frost and cold winds, making it best suited to frost-free or northern regions. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering, and reduce watering during winter. Avoid planting in heavy or waterlogged soil. Aloe ballyi forms a tall, upright stem with slender, recurved green leaves and produces tubular pink to red flowers. It is ideal for feature planting in dry, warm gardens or large containers in sheltered outdoor spaces.

Aloe ballyi care tips

Aloe ballyi grows best in full sun with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering during winter to prevent rot. It prefers a warm, sheltered position and should be protected from frost, especially when young. Prune only to remove damaged leaves or flower stalks. This aloe is drought-tolerant, slow-growing, and ideal for feature planting in dry, low-maintenance gardens or large containers in frost-free areas.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe ballyi typically grows 3 to 5 metres tall and 1 to 1.5 metres wide, forming a tall, single-stemmed tree with an upright rosette of arching leaves. When planting multiple specimens, space them at least 2 to 3 metres apart to allow for mature spread and proper airflow. This also highlights their striking form and prevents overcrowding in landscape settings.
