How to grow the tree Aloe (Aloe bainesii) in NZ

To grow the Tree Aloe (Aloe bainesii) successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, ideally sandy or gritty. This large aloe thrives in warm, frost-free areas and should be protected from cold winds and heavy frost, especially when young. Plant in a raised bed or sloped area to improve drainage. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between watering. Tree Aloe grows slowly into a striking, branched tree, making it ideal for feature planting in dry or subtropical gardens. In cooler regions, it is best grown in a large container and moved to shelter during winter.

Aloe bainesii care tips

Aloe bainesii, or Tree Aloe, thrives in full sun with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter. Protect young plants from frost and cold winds, especially in cooler regions. Prune only to remove damaged or lower branches as it matures. This aloe is drought-tolerant, slow-growing, and ideal as a bold architectural feature in dry or subtropical New Zealand gardens.

Tree Aloe size, growth rate, and spacing

Aloe bainesii, or Tree Aloe, can grow 10 to 15 metres tall and 4 to 6 metres wide over many years, forming a thick trunk with broad, branching heads. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, faster in warm climates with ideal conditions. When planting, space Tree Aloes at least 4 to 6 metres away from buildings, paths, or other large plants to allow for their mature size and to showcase their dramatic form.
