How to grow the Large Yellow Aloe (Aloe alooides) in NZ

To grow the Large Yellow Aloe (Aloe alooides) successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. This aloe prefers dry conditions and is best suited to warm, frost-free or coastal regions. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering in winter to prevent rot. Avoid planting in heavy or poorly drained soils. Aloe alooides forms a tall, single stem with upright, grey-green leaves and produces long, yellow flower spikes in late summer to early autumn. It is ideal for feature planting in dry gardens, borders, or large containers in warm, sheltered spots.

Aloe alooides care tips

Aloe alooides, or Large Yellow Aloe, grows best in full sun with free-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Water deeply but only when the soil is dry, and reduce watering during winter to prevent rot. Protect from heavy frost, especially while young, by planting in a warm, sheltered position or using a container in cooler areas. Remove old flower stalks and any damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy. This aloe is drought-tolerant and well-suited to dry, low-maintenance gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Aloe alooides typically grows 1.5 to 2 metres tall and about 1 to 1.5 metres wide, forming an upright, single-stemmed plant with long, arching leaves. When planting multiple Large Yellow Aloes, space them at least 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow room for mature growth and to ensure good airflow. This spacing also highlights their tall flower spikes and architectural form effectively in the landscape.
