Agave montana, commonly known as the Mountain Agave, this variety features broad and stiff, dark green leaves. The broad and fleshy leaves are held as a rosette with each leaf having a series of dark spines along its edge. Mature plants may produce a flower spike that can reach up to 4 m in length which bears clusters of yellow flowers. Ignoring the flowering stem, it typically grows to 1 m tall and 1.3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun with a well-drained soil. It is very tolerant of dry conditions, cool climates, and will tolerate moderate frost. Agave montana is commonly used as an attractive feature in modern gardens, particularly when planted in clusters or used to contrast with other colours and forms. It is also ideal for mixed plantings, rock gardens, growing in a container, or including in Mediterranean garden themes.
