Agave 'Kissho Kan'

Butterfly Agave

Agave 'Kissho Kan' is a compact evergreen succulent prized for its beautifully variegated foliage and neat architectural form. It forms symmetrical rosettes of blue green leaves with broad creamy yellow margins, creating strong colour and contrast throughout the year. The compact habit makes Agave 'Kissho Kan' particularly useful in New Zealand gardens where a bold foliage feature is wanted without requiring a large space. It is ideal for rock gardens, gravel gardens, raised beds, containers, and contemporary landscapes. Once established, this low maintenance succulent tolerates dry conditions well and performs best in a warm position with plenty of light and excellent drainage.

How to grow Agave 'Kissho Kan' in NZ

Agave 'Kissho Kan' grows best in full sun or light shade with very free draining soil. Choose a warm position where water does not collect around the roots, particularly during winter. Sandy or gravelly soils are ideal, while heavier soils should be improved substantially before planting or the plant can be grown in a raised bed or container. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering as the root system develops. Established plants tolerate dry periods well and should not remain continuously wet. In colder parts of New Zealand, provide a sheltered position with protection from severe frost and excessive winter moisture.

Agave 'Kissho Kan' care tips

Agave 'Kissho Kan' is a low maintenance plant when grown with excellent drainage and plenty of light. Water occasionally during prolonged dry periods, allowing the soil to dry between watering, and reduce moisture during winter. A light application of succulent fertiliser during spring can support healthy growth, although heavy feeding is unnecessary. Remove damaged or ageing lower leaves carefully to maintain the tidy rosette. Offsets can be removed if a single specimen is preferred or left to develop into a wider clump. Container grown plants should be kept in a free draining potting mix with unobstructed drainage holes.

Agave 'Kissho Kan' size, spacing, and growth rate

Agave 'Kissho Kan' forms a compact rosette and generally reaches around 30 to 45 cm tall and approximately 45 to 60 cm wide at maturity. Growth is relatively slow, making it particularly easy to accommodate in small gardens, rockeries, and containers. Allow around 50 to 70 cm between plants so each rosette has enough room to develop and display its attractive variegated foliage. Plants may gradually produce offsets and form a broader clump over time. Its compact dimensions and controlled growth make Agave 'Kissho Kan' an excellent choice where strong architectural foliage is required in a relatively small space.

Landscaping uses for Agave 'Kissho Kan'

Agave 'Kissho Kan' is an excellent landscaping plant for adding architectural form and bright foliage contrast to New Zealand gardens. Use it in gravel gardens, rock gardens, raised beds, contemporary landscapes, or decorative containers where its variegated rosettes can be appreciated. Its compact habit makes it particularly useful near entrances, in courtyards, and through smaller garden beds. Agave 'Kissho Kan' combines well with decorative stone, ornamental grasses, and other drought tolerant plants. Several plants can be repeated through a landscape for rhythm and colour, while a single specimen makes an attractive year round focal point.
