How to grow Aeonium canariense in NZ

Aeonium canariense grows best in full sun or light shade with free draining soil. Improve drainage with coarse sand or pumice if required and avoid heavy, waterlogged soils. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during spring to encourage healthy growth.

Aeonium canariense care tips

Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings and reduce watering during the cooler months. Remove old leaves from the base of the rosettes to keep plants tidy. Protect from severe frost and ensure containers have excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Aeonium canariense size, spacing, and growth rate

Aeonium canariense typically grows 50 to 80 centimetres tall and up to 1 metre wide. Space plants around 80 centimetres apart to allow the rosettes to develop fully. Growth is moderate, with mature plants forming impressive clumps over time.

Landscaping uses for Aeonium canariense

Aeonium canariense is ideal for rock gardens, succulent gardens, coastal plantings, containers, courtyards, and Mediterranean style landscapes. Its bold foliage creates a dramatic focal point and combines beautifully with agaves, echeverias, and other drought tolerant plants.
