Aeonium canariense care guide

Aeonium canariense is a hardy succulent that prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. Watering should be infrequent—only when the soil is dry—especially during winter when the plant enters dormancy. It performs best in mild climates and should be protected from heavy frost. Remove spent flower stalks and old leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Ideal for rockeries, containers, and coastal gardens, Aeonium canariense requires little maintenance while offering year-round appeal.

Aeonium canariense flowers

Aeonium canariense produces a striking flower spike that emerges from the centre of mature rosettes, typically during late spring to early summer. The flowers are bright yellow and star-shaped, forming a large conical cluster that can reach up to 60 cm tall. Flowering marks the end of that particular rosette’s life, but offsets around the base continue growing to maintain the plant. This dramatic bloom adds vibrant seasonal interest to succulent gardens and is highly attractive to pollinators.

Aeonium canariense Propagation

Aeonium canariense is easily propagated through offsets or stem cuttings. Offsets form naturally around the base of mature rosettes and can be gently removed and replanted once they develop a few roots. Stem cuttings should be taken during the active growing season, left to callous for a few days, then planted in a gritty, well-draining mix. Keep the soil lightly moist until new growth appears. This method ensures quick establishment and maintains the desirable traits of the parent plant.
