Psidium guajava (Yellow Guava)

Psidium guajava is the variety of Guava that most people are familiar with and is a shrub grown for its foliage and fruit. It bears large, yellow fruit amidst the lush, dark green foliage. These are produced in the summer and can be eaten fresh, as the skin is thin and the pink flesh is juicy, soft, and tasty. It typically grows to 4 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. The best performance of this shrub is achieved when it is grown on a well-drained, sheltered, frost-free site in full sun. This Guava is commonly included in a mixed planting, grown specifically for its fruit, added to a tropical garden, trimmed into a hedge, or used as a backdrop for other plants. The fruit is excellent for attracting birds into the garden.

How to grow Psidium guajava (Yellow Guava) in NZ

Psidium guajava, commonly known as Yellow Guava, grows best in full sun and warm, sheltered locations with free-draining soil. It is best suited to frost-free or subtropical areas of New Zealand, such as Northland, coastal Bay of Plenty, or northern Auckland. Plant in a sunny position with protection from wind and cold. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, and mulch to conserve moisture. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage flowering and fruiting. Prune after harvesting to shape the tree and remove any dead or crossing branches. Avoid planting in soils that are heavy or poorly drained.

Psidium guajava (Yellow Guava) care tips

Yellow Guava is easy to care for in warm, sheltered areas of New Zealand. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and protect from frost, especially when the plant is young. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first 1–2 years. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune after fruiting to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and fruit development. Avoid overwatering and planting in areas with waterlogged soil.

Psidium guajava plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Psidium guajava (Yellow Guava) typically grows to 3–5 metres tall and 3–4 metres wide, forming a rounded, bushy tree. It has a moderate to fast growth rate in warm, frost-free areas. For orchard-style planting, space trees 3–4 metres apart to allow good airflow and light penetration. When used in home gardens, allow at least 2.5–3 metres of space between the plant and other plants or structures to accommodate its mature spread and ensure easy access for pruning and harvesting.
