The Zanthoxylum simulans plant, commonly known as Szechuan Red Pepper or the Red Peppercorn Tree, is a deciduous shrub grown for its spicy berries and foliage. At about three years of age, it produces clusters yellow flowers during spring which result in the flavoursome, red berries during summer. It grows as a thorny, deciduous shrub with open branching to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide, and can easily be contained with trimming. Zanthoxylum simulans is commonly grown specifically for the berries, included in a mixed planting, or simply grown as something a little unusual.

The Zanthoxylum simulans plant, commonly known as Szechuan Red Pepper or the Red Peppercorn Tree, is a deciduous shrub grown for its spicy berries and foliage. At about three years of age, it produces clusters yellow flowers during spring which result in the flavoursome, red berries during summer. It grows as a thorny, deciduous shrub with open branching to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide, and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. Zanthoxylum simulans is commonly grown specifically for the berries, included in a mixed planting, or simply grown as something a little unusual.
