Zanthoxylum armatum, commonly known as Green Peppercorn Plant or Szechuan Pepper, is a deciduous shrub grown for its spicy berries and foliage. It produces clusters yellow flowers during spring which result in the flavoursome, green berries during summer which age to black when dried. It grows as a thorny, deciduous shrub with open branching to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide, and can easily be contained with trimming. Zanthoxylum armatum is commonly grown specifically for the berries, included in a mixed planting, or simply grown as something a little unusual.

Zanthoxylum armatum Details

Zanthoxylum armatum, commonly known as Green Peppercorn Plant or Szechuan Pepper, is a deciduous shrub grown for its spicy berries and foliage. At about three years of age, it produces clusters yellow flowers during spring which result in the flavoursome, green berries during summer which age to black when dried. It grows as a thorny, deciduous shrub with open branching to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide, and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. Zanthoxylum armatum is commonly grown specifically for the berries, included in a mixed planting, or simply grown as something a little unusual.
