How to grow Viburnum tinus in NZ

Viburnum tinus (Laurustinus) is a hardy, evergreen shrub that grows well in full sun to partial shade and well drained soil. It’s suited to a wide range of New Zealand climates and performs well in coastal, urban, and rural gardens. Plant in a sheltered spot with good airflow. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, then only during dry spells. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Light pruning after flowering encourages bushier growth and helps maintain a tidy shape, especially when used as a hedge.

Viburnum tinus care tips

Viburnum tinus is an easy-care plant and well-suited to a range of New Zealand garden conditions. Plant in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil, and water regularly during the first year to support establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and handles wind, light frost, and coastal exposure. Lightly prune after flowering to shape and encourage dense growth. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed competition.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Viburnum tinus typically grows to 2–3 metres tall and 1.5–2.5 metres wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub. It has a moderate growth rate, making it ideal for hedging or screening over time without becoming unruly. For hedging, space plants 80 cm to 1 metre apart for a tight, formal look. When growing as a specimen or in mixed borders, allow 1.5–2 metres of spacing to accommodate its natural spread and ensure good airflow.
