Tibouchina Skylab, commonly known as the Purple Blooming Tree, is a lovely variety that is grown for both its foliage and flowers. It grows as an evergreen shrub or climber and carries dark green foliage. Intense, purple flowers are held above the foliage generally twice per year (spring and autumn) with sporadic flowering through the other seasons. It grows compactly to about 2 m tall and the same wide if it has nothing to climb. Where it has something to climb such as a trellis or other plant it will grow much taller. Best performance with this plant is achieved when grown on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of dry periods but is frost sensitive. Tibouchina Skylab is commonly included in a mixed planting, maintained in a container, allowed to climb, or trimmed and used as a backdrop for smaller plants.
