The Brilliant Lilly Pilly, scientifically known as Syzygium australe Brilliant, is a vigorous, large shrub grown for its attractive foliage. The new foliage is red which then develops copper tones before aging to dark green. As the new growth emerges the plant has dual colouring. The foliage is borne on a dense network of branches. Small, white, fragrant flowers are produced in summer and provide extra interest to this plant. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 2 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. This plant grows best in full sun on a well-drained site. This hardy plant is tolerant of dry periods, frost, cold environments, and coastal conditions. The Brilliant Lilly Pilly is commonly used for hedging, screening, as a backdrop for smaller plants, as a feature plant, in mixed plantings, or grown in a container. As a potted plant it looks great maintained on a patio or around pool and barbecue areas.
