Syringa Ruhm von Horstenstein is a variety of French Lilac grown for its showy flowers from late spring through summer. During this time, purple buds open to reveal clusters of fragrant, single, dark purple flowers. These are absolutely stunning and also attract butterflies. The foliage comprises dark green, heart-shaped leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows upright with a somewhat loose habit to about 2.5 m tall and 2 m wide though can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this plant is achieved when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of light shade, short periods of dry, frost, and cool climates. Syringa Ruhm von Horstenstein is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or grown as a flowering hedge.
