Strobilanthes gossypinus, commonly known as the Persian Shield, is an evergreen shrub grown for its lush foliage. It features grey-green leaves that are covered with fine hairs. These mid-sized, showy leaves are held densely off sturdy stems as it grows to 1 m tall and 1.5 m wide. Strobilanthes gossypinus is commonly included in a mixed planting, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools, maintained in a container, or used as a backdrop for smaller plants. Its foliage also makes it suitable for inclusion in a tropical garden, providing excellent texture.

How to grow Strobilanthes gossypinus in NZ

Strobilanthes gossypinus grows best in NZ in a sunny to partially shaded position with well-drained soil. This hardy, drought-tolerant shrub enjoys warmth and protection from heavy frost. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry periods. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its rounded shape and encourage dense growth. A slow-release fertiliser applied in spring will support healthy foliage and vibrant seasonal flowers.

Persian Shield indoor care tips

When grown indoors, Persian Shield needs bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant purple foliage. Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top centimetre to dry slightly between waterings. Maintain high humidity by misting or using a humidity tray, and keep temperatures above 15°C. Feed every 4–6 weeks in the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Pinch back stems to encourage bushier growth and remove any faded leaves to keep the plant looking fresh.
