Spiraea japonica is a medium-sized shrub grown for its pretty flowers. Pink flowers are borne as clusters through summer above the elegant, green foliage. The flowers literally transform the plant into a spectre of beauty. This deciduous shrub grows with an upright, mounded form to about 1.5 m tall and the same wide, and performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, frost, and cool climates. Spiraea japonica provides a lovely contrast to other plant colours in mixed plantings. It is also used in borders, maintained in a container, trimmed into a hedge, included in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or mass planted for a stunning display.
