Sophora prostrata ‘Little Baby’ is a variety of the commonly known, Dwarf Kowhai, and is a NZ native shrub with eye catching form. The intertwined, almost tangled branches are golden coloured and host very small leaves. The flowers in spring are orange, few in number, and almost hidden within the foliage. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 1.3 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. This is a very tough plant that will tolerate cold, dry, exposed sites, and coastal locations though good drainage is essential. This Dwarf Kowhai is commonly grown as an interesting hedge, added to a mixed planting, included in a native planting, or maintained in a container. It is well-suited to bonsai.
