Sophora molloyi is a variety of Kowhai which grows as a bushy, spreading tree to about 6 m tall and 4 m wide. Its natural habitat is coastal scrub on exposed maritime sites, hence its common name, the Cook Strait Kowhai. This NZ native will retain its green foliage year round unlike other varieties which tend to be deciduous in cool climates. It produces pendulous clusters of golden-yellow flowers from autumn until spring, with the nectar filled flowers great for attracting birds and bees. This tree grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, though it is tolerant of frost, cool climates, wind, and poorer soils. The Cook Strait Kowhai is commonly included in native and revegetation plantings, planted to provide winter colour, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in coastal gardens, or planted to attract birds.
