Growing conditions for Sophora 'Dragons Gold'

Sophora 'Dragon’s Gold' thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, though it will tolerate a range of soil types, including clay as long as it drains freely. It is drought-tolerant once established and can handle light frosts, making it well-suited to most parts of New Zealand. While it benefits from a sheltered position when young, it is generally hardy and low-maintenance. Good air circulation and avoiding waterlogged sites will help ensure vigorous, healthy growth.

Sophora 'Dragons Gold' Care Tips

To care for Sophora 'Dragon’s Gold', plant it in a sunny, well-drained spot and water regularly during the first growing season to help it establish. Once established, it requires minimal watering and is quite drought-tolerant. Apply mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the base of the plant. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. This low-maintenance plant is hardy and resistant to most pests and diseases, thriving with minimal fuss.

Plant Size and Spacing

Sophora 'Dragon’s Gold' typically grows to around 1–2 metres tall and wide, forming a compact, bushy shape. For planting, space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for full growth and airflow. This spacing is ideal for borders, native gardens, or low hedging, while closer spacing (1–1.2 metres) can be used for denser planting effects.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Sophora Dragons Gold? We are here to help.

Hi. I have one of these, About 5 years, old, near full size. 2 months ago shifted location, but not far and similar aspect to previously. Kept well watered after shoddy and through recent dry spell in Auckland. But recently maybe one third of leaves have died and fallen. Is this normal for Autumn? Thanks

Sounds like a stress response which is normal. Keep up the watering until you see new growth appearing is all you can do.

1. Would this particular Kowhai do well in a 3/4 wine barrel? 2. The average plant height of the 35 L container is 90 cm on the website ($417.10). Is the height correctly stated? Thank you

Hi, yes it will do well in a wine barrel and the height is as stated.
