Skimmia japonica (female) Details

Skimmia japonica (female) is a handsome, evergreen shrub. It features mid-sized, glossy, dark green leaves held on a densely branched plant. Through spring the foliage is adorned with clusters of small and showy, red-pink buds that open to reveal fragrant, cream-white, star-shaped flowers. The flowers result in glossy, bright red berries which persist for many months. Please note: a male will also need to be grown nearby for berries to form. It grows with a rounded shape to about 1.3 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this plant are achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It will tolerate moderate frost though it should be protected while establishing. Skimmia japonica (female) is commonly included in a mixed planting, grown in a container, planted around the barbecue area, or grown as an informal hedge.
