Growth Habit and Size

Salix repens argentea, commonly known as Silver Willow, is a deciduous shrub grown for its impressive foliage and catkins. It produces grey-green leaves on red coloured branchlets which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. Grey coloured catkins are produced in spring which are quite unique. It grows with a somewhat sprawling habit to about 1 m tall and 2 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost and cool climates but does not cope well with extended dry periods. Salix repens argentea is commonly planted around water features, included in a mixed planting, used as a groundcover, maintained in a container, or used to provide different colours and textures in the garden.

Planting and Care Advice

Best planted in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Salix repens ‘Argentea’ is drought tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Regular trimming helps maintain shape and encourages dense, healthy growth.

Landscaping Uses for Salix repens ‘Argentea’

Widely used for ground cover, erosion control on slopes, and coastal planting due to its hardy nature. Its attractive silver foliage adds colour and texture to native gardens and restoration projects.
