Ribes sanguineum, commonly known as the Flowering Currant, is a deciduous shrub grown for its lovely flowering. Through spring and into summer it produces clusters of pink flowers which are borne off upright stems which also host the mid-green foliage. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide and should be cut back by half each winter. Ribes sanguineum is commonly grown as an ornamental where it is added to a mixed planting or grown as an informal hedge.

Ribes sanguineum Details

Ribes sanguineum, commonly known as the Flowering Currant, is a deciduous shrub grown for its lovely flowering. Through spring and into summer it produces clusters of pink flowers which are borne off upright stems which also host the mid-green foliage. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide and should be cut back by half each winter. Pruning not only contains growth but also encourage new wood for longer flowering. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Being deciduous it will tolerate frost and cool climates. Ribes sanguineum is commonly grown as an ornamental where it is added to a mixed planting or grown as an informal hedge.
