“Pontiyak” is a variety of Rhododendron that features large and showy mauve-pink flowers through spring. The flowers fade to white with age, giving the plant a mulit-coloured display during this time. It is reasonably fast growing with an erect growth habit, bearing dark green leaves that complement the flowers wonderfully. It typically grows to 1.2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frosts but should be protected from harsh frosts when young. “Pontiyak” is commonly included in a mixed planting, used in tropical or cottage gardens, maintained in a container, or planted around outdoor living areas where the beauty can be appreciated.
