Pseudowintera 'Red Hot'

Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' is a bright and vibrant NZ native shrub. New foliage emerges red and light yellows, and ages to become a fresh green colour during winter. In summer, the red tones become more pronounced again. The leaf colouring is truly impressive and is accentuated with small, yellow-green flowers in spring, which result in small, dark berries. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide. Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' is a great plant for brightening up bland areas and is often planted around living areas, included in mixed and native plantings, or maintained in a container.

In NZ gardens, it adapts easily to a wide range of conditions and is tolerant of frost, wind, and periods of dryness once established. Water regularly during establishment to ensure strong root development. Planting in a slightly sheltered spot with some protection from harsh afternoon sun helps maintain the vibrant leaf colour and healthy growth.

Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' care tips

Caring for Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' is very simple. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth and bold foliage colour. Mulching helps to conserve moisture and suppress weeds around the base. Pruning is rarely required but old or damaged stems can be removed to keep the plant looking tidy. During prolonged dry periods, provide additional watering to maintain vigour. With minimal care, Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' will thrive and deliver lasting colour in your garden.

Pseudowintera 'Red Hot' typically grows 1 to 1.5 metres tall with a similar spread, forming a neat and bushy shrub. For group planting or hedging, space plants about 80 cm to 1 metre apart to achieve a dense effect. Growth is generally slow to moderate, meaning it is easy to manage without frequent trimming. Its tidy form and vibrant leaves make it especially suited for smaller gardens, borders, or mixed plantings where year round colour is desired.
