Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel)

5 from 2 customers

Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as the Portuguese Laurel, is a large shrub that is widely grown across the world. It features dark red stems that bear lush, dense, and dark green leaves. The white flowers are small and fragrant, followed by small, dark purple berries. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Prunus lusitanica is an excellent plant for a large garden. It is commonly used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted for screening and shelter, used for topiary, or included in a “white” garden. Landscape designers favour Portuguese Laurels for their elegance and versatility.

What are the garden uses for Prunus lusitanica in NZ?

Prunus lusitanica is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as a specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is an excellent complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Portuguese Laurels are also popular plants for growing in pots, and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit make them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Prunus lusitanica is so popular in NZ gardens!

What does Prunus lusitanica need to grow well?

Prunus lusitanica grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained soil. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, coastal environments, and humid climates. Wind protection is essential to ensure a better-formed tree that will grow prolifically. These trees do not thrive on poorly drained sites or in areas with excessive watering.

Prunus lusitanica problems

When considering Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel), it's essential to be aware of potential problems that can arise. Inadequate watering is a common issue as they require consistent moisture while establishing. Conversely, overwatering can also cause root rot problems, particularly in poorly drained soils. Powdery mildew and leaf spot can affect Prunus lusitanica, and these are often exacerbated by poor air circulation and damp conditions. Common pests include aphids, scale insects, and vine weevils, which cause damage to leaves and stems. Fungal diseases and pest problems can be easily addressed with the use of an appropriate agrichemical. Similarly, careful attention to soil drainage and watering will resolve the underlying cause of most issues.

Pleached Prunus lusitanica

A pleached Prunus lusitanica hedge starts with purchasing standardised trees. These typically have a clear stem of 80 cm to 1.5 metres. The trees are then spaced 1-2 metres apart and trimmed to become a ‘hedge on stilts’. The Plant Company considers the optimum pleached hedge for a pool garden or privacy screen to be 1 metre standards spaced 1.25 metres apart. This spacing enables the trees to merge within 2-3 years. Moreover, at this spacing, the trees compete for light with one another and, in doing so, push upward. The result is a narrower pleached hedge than if planted wider apart. Please email your request to shop@theplantcompany.co.nz, specifying that you are looking for trees for a pleached hedge.

Prunus lusitanica diseases

When it comes to Prunus lusitanica diseases, it's important to be aware of a few key issues that can affect their health. The most common leaf diseases are powdery mildew and leaf spot. Powdery mildew is characterised by a white, powdery coating that appears on the leaves. It can cause leaf distortion and premature leaf drop. Leaf Spot pathogens cause dark or brownish spots on the leaves. In severe cases, it can lead to significant leaf drop. Both of these are easily treated with a fungicide. The final and more serious problem, particularly in poorly drained soils, is Phytophthora root rot. Symptoms include wilting, yellowing leaves, and ultimately, plant death. It becomes prevalent in poorly drained soils, particularly when overwatering occurs, or in both cases. The only remedy is to correct the drainage and water practices. It is also important to remember good garden hygiene. That is, remove fallen leaves and other debris that can harbour fungal spores.

Prunus lusitanica care

Caring for Prunus lusitanica is simply about getting a few easy things right so the plant thrives. They prefer a sheltered spot in either full sun or part shade. A well-drained and fertile soil is crucial for success. Adding organic matter, such as compost, to the soil during planting will help improve soil fertility. They prefer a moist soil, so consistent watering is essential, especially during dry periods. However, be careful to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Applying tree fertiliser in spring will keep the plants well-fed for the year. Any trimming should be undertaken in autumn or early spring, primarily for shaping the tree. Applying mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. The Plant Company recommends staking trees to provide them with extra support. Monitor for pests, such as scale insects, and diseases, like powdery mildew, and treat as needed with an appropriate agrichemical if necessary.
