Protea 'Fiery Sunset'

How to grow Protea 'Fiery Sunset' in NZ

Protea 'Fiery Sunset' grows best in full sun with very well drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils as these can lead to root problems. Choose a warm, sheltered position, especially in cooler parts of New Zealand. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once the plant is settled. Avoid fertilisers high in phosphorus, as proteas are sensitive to this nutrient.

Protea 'Fiery Sunset' care tips

Protea 'Fiery Sunset' is low maintenance when planted in suitable conditions. Water sparingly once established, particularly during extended dry periods. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages bushier growth. Remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy. Use low phosphorus fertiliser if required and ensure good airflow around the plant to reduce disease risk and support healthy growth.

Protea 'Fiery Sunset' size, spacing, and growth rate

Protea 'Fiery Sunset' typically grows to around 1.5 to 2 metres in height and width, forming a dense shrub. Space plants about 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for airflow and full development. It has a moderate growth rate and establishes well in suitable conditions. Light pruning helps maintain a compact form and encourages a greater number of flowering stems over time.
