Podocarpus ‘Maki’ is a variety of the commonly known, Shrubby Yew Tree, and is a hardy shrub grown for its foliage and form. It produces dense, dark green leaves, with new foliage emerging lime green. The combination of old and new foliage creates a two-toned display for most of the year. It grows slowly with a columnar shape to about 3 m tall and 2 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this evergreen are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. Podocarpus ‘Maki’ is commonly included in a mixed planting, trimmed into a hedge, maintained in a container, used for topiary and bonsai, included in pool and Japanese gardens, or planted to border an entrance. It makes for a fantastic addition to a NZ garden.
