How to grow Podocarpus drouynianus in NZ

Podocarpus drouynianus grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile free draining soil. Prepare the planting area with compost to improve soil structure and water well during the establishment period. Once established it is reasonably tolerant of dry conditions but performs best with occasional watering during extended dry spells. Choose a sheltered location for the healthiest growth.

Podocarpus drouynianus care tips

Podocarpus drouynianus is easy to maintain and requires very little pruning to retain its natural shape. Feed in spring with a quality slow release fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds while keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Remove any damaged or dead branches as required.

Podocarpus drouynianus size, spacing, and growth rate

Podocarpus drouynianus typically grows to around two metres tall and one and a half metres wide over time. Space plants about one and a half to two metres apart when planting in groups to allow good air movement and natural development. Growth is moderate with plants gradually forming dense attractive evergreen specimens.
