How to grow Plagianthus divaricatus in NZ

Plagianthus divaricatus, or Marsh Ribbonwood, is a tough New Zealand native that thrives in coastal, estuarine, and wetland areas. It grows best in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including heavy clay and saline or periodically flooded ground. Plant in a sunny, well-drained position and water regularly during the first year to help it establish. Once established, it is very hardy, wind and salt-tolerant, and requires little maintenance. Mulch to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture, and apply a native fertiliser in spring if desired.

Plagianthus divaricatus care tips

Plagianthus divaricatus is hardy and thrives with minimal care once established. Water regularly during the first year to support root development, especially in dry or inland sites. It tolerates salt, wind, and periodic flooding, making it ideal for coastal or wetland planting. Pruning is rarely necessary, but it can be done in late winter to maintain the shape or remove dead wood. Mulch lightly to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture, and apply a light dressing of native fertiliser in spring if desired.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Plagianthus divaricatus typically grows to 1.5–2 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide, forming a dense, twiggy thicket. It has a fast growth rate, especially in coastal or wetland conditions. For restoration or shelter planting, space plants 1–1.2 metres apart. In mixed plantings or gardens, allow 1.5 metres between plants to accommodate natural spread while ensuring good airflow.
