How to grow Pittosporum 'Sumo' in NZ

Pittosporum 'Sumo' grows best in a sunny to partially shaded position with well drained soil. It adapts readily to a range of soil types provided drainage is adequate. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root development, then reduce watering once plants are settled. Incorporating compost into the planting area can improve soil structure and support healthy growth. Applying mulch around the base helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and encourage successful establishment and long term plant health.

Pittosporum 'Sumo' care tips

Pittosporum 'Sumo' is easy to maintain and requires minimal care once established. Water during extended dry periods, particularly while plants are becoming established. Light trimming can be undertaken to maintain a tidy shape or create a formal low hedge. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage fresh foliage growth and maintain plant vigour. Remove any damaged or dead branches as required. Its naturally compact habit reduces the need for frequent pruning while keeping the plant attractive throughout the year.

Pittosporum 'Sumo' size, spacing, and growth rate

Pittosporum 'Sumo' typically grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres tall and wide, forming a dense rounded shrub. Growth is moderate, allowing plants to develop steadily while remaining easy to manage. Space plants approximately 60 to 80 centimetres apart for low hedging or around 1 metre apart when planted as individual specimens. This spacing provides adequate airflow and room for development while maintaining an attractive and balanced display within the landscape.

Landscaping uses for Pittosporum 'Sumo'

Pittosporum 'Sumo' is ideal for low hedges, borders, container planting, courtyard gardens, and formal landscape designs. Its dense foliage and compact growth habit make it particularly useful where space is limited or a structured appearance is desired. The evergreen foliage provides year round interest and combines well with flowering plants and other shrubs.
