Best Uses in Landscaping

This cultivar is well-regarded for its versatility and resilience. It is often planted as a low hedge or border in urban gardens, native planting schemes, and commercial spaces. It also suits coastal gardens due to its excellent wind and salt tolerance. Whether used for structural planting, mass plantings, or compact shelter belts, Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’ provides a dependable option for difficult sites. Its tidy habit makes it especially attractive in small spaces or where low-maintenance design is a priority.

Growth Rate and Size

Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’ has a moderate growth rate and will typically reach full size within five to seven years. It maintains its compact shape naturally but can also be trimmed to form a more defined hedge. The plant’s growth habit is dense and even, contributing to its appeal as a tidy, architectural shrub.

Ideal Growing Conditions

This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. Once established, it is highly tolerant of wind, dry spells, coastal exposure, and light frost. It is not suited to waterlogged or poorly draining soil, so ensure planting areas have adequate drainage. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and reduce weed competition, especially in the first year after planting.

Foliage and Features

The foliage of Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’ is one of its standout attributes. The fine, light green leaves are closely packed, giving the shrub a lush and tidy appearance. While flowering is not its primary appeal, the year-round structure and soft colour make it valuable in gardens needing consistency and reliability.

Maintenance and Care

This is a low-maintenance shrub that benefits from a light prune once or twice a year to keep it compact and promote fresh growth. It seldom suffers from pest or disease issues and rarely requires watering once established, making it a good choice for low-effort gardens. In windy or dry areas, it will continue to thrive without significant care.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’ – Compact NZ Native Shrub? We are here to help.

We would like 3 x 40cm high of the Stephens Island plants - just checking that the smaller (2.5l) container has these as we'd have expected the larger pot (3.5l) to have had this size. Many thanks Gill Brackenbury

Yes, they will be at the height stated. Sometimes the larger grades can be shorter as they might still be a little younger but they will catch up and pass the smaller pot sizes.
