Growing Pittosporum Silver Sheen Successfully in NZ

Pittosporum Silver Sheen thrives best in well-drained soils with good air circulation. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable across many New Zealand garden environments. Water regularly during dry periods to establish strong roots, but avoid waterlogging which can harm the plant. Mulching with organic material helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Site selection is important; sheltered spots protect it from harsh winds and frost.

Pittosporum Silver Sheen Care Tips

Regular pruning of Pittosporum Silver Sheen encourages bushier growth and maintains shape. Remove dead or diseased branches promptly to improve overall plant health. Fertilising annually with a balanced fertiliser supports vigorous foliage and flowering. Keep an eye out for pests like scale or aphids, and treat infestations early with organic options where possible. Proper care ensures your {plant_name} remains a resilient and attractive feature in your garden.

Plant Size and Spacing

Pittosporum Silver Sheen generally grows steadily to its mature size, which varies between species but usually ranges from 1 to 8 metres tall and wide. Allow ample spacing of at least 1 to 4 metres between plants to ensure healthy airflow and reduce disease risk. Appropriate spacing helps plants receive adequate sunlight and nutrients, supporting vigorous growth. Consider mature size when planning your garden layout to avoid overcrowding and maintenance issues.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Pittosporum Silver Sheen (Kohuhu)? We are here to help.

New neighbours still building their house, have erected a dark green steel fence that towers above us at 2.5m very close to our house and making us feel enclosed by metal. Once their landscapers have fixed broken concrete on our side and I can see how narrow the path which runs parallel to back of our house around to garage will ultimately be, I'm intending to order some Silver Sheen to quickly grow up and soften the effect. We're in our 70s and don't want to be forever trimming. Do you think it is slender enough or is there a more suitable pitto that won't grow too tall? Or even a dwarf variety of something similar you could suggest that likes same Hawkes Bay conditions - tolerates periods of long dryness, wind, salt air. Thank you very much. Jan FitzGerald
