Pittosporum patulum is a small NZ native tree that grows with a slender trunk bearing dark green, coarsely toothed leaves that become longer and smoother with age. In spring it bears fragrant and showy, purple flowers in clusters. Pittosporum patulum is under-rated for planting in NZ gardens but is well suited mixed plantings or anywhere a rewarding NZ native is wanted.
